Identity - Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

If you’ve ever watched the TV show with that title, you’ll know it focuses on folk who are in the public eye and explores their identity through their ancestors, taking us on a timeline journey to see some of their family history and give a glimpse of their cultural, social and economic heritage.

But how do we define ourselves? What does ‘Identity’ mean to you?

This November our Reading for Pleasure theme is precisely that: IDENTITY

The books and resources we have chosen this month reflect some of the different ways we think of ourselves when considering what makes us the person we are. Sometimes we will identify with a certain group and feel that it gives us a sense of belonging; at other times we feel our identity is what makes us unique, different from those around us.

Here’s a taste for what you might find in our campus library displays during November.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

We also feature the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) who rose to fame in the late 70s, early 80s.  His work featured a mixture of media, such as drawing, painting, text, image and poetry.

Basquiat made a lasting impact on the neo-expressionism art movement.  His art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregations and social commentary.

Books that we have available on Basquiat can be found on the Black History Month 2022 reading list.

Proud to be black

Carly Ramirez-Herelle, Head of Library Services also features in the Universities ‘Proud to be Black’ initiative.

The Future We Choose

Let's talk about our home.

Planet Earth.

It’s big, it’s beautiful, and it’s biodiverse.

But it’s changing. It’s getting warmer, and the planets natural resources are being used up. The BBC states that –

“World temperatures are rising because of human activity, and climate change now threatens every aspect of human life. Left unchecked, humans and nature will experience catastrophic warming, with worsening droughts, greater sea level rise and mass extinction of species. We face a huge challenge, but there are potential solutions. What is Climate Change. A Really Simple Guide (BBC)

This month, our theme for Books Unlocked is “The Future We Choose”. We’re going green and sharing books and resources on sustainability and climate change - just in time for Earth Day on the 22nd April! Protecting our planet and its inhabitants is indeed a huge challenge, and it may seem like an overwhelming task. But if everyone focusses on helping in their own way, then together, we can make amazing things happen.

There’s only so much we can do as individuals. And much of the change needs to come from governments and large corporations. But as a collective, we can make an enormous difference, and our efforts can influence the actions of those in power. Together, we can choose what our future will be.

We hope that by making use of these resources this month, you’ll come away more informed and with some ideas on how you can help – your way.

Reuse – refill bottles at refill stations and fountains rather than buying new ones, use reusable cups and containers.

Reduce – Avoid buying new things if you don’t really need them, buy second hand where possible, opt for products that use less packaging like loose-leaf tea and digital products.

Recycle Don’t bin, recycle! But only if it can be recycled. Check the packaging and your local council website to see what can be recycled. Opt for products that come in recyclable packaging.
