Books Unlocked February 2019 - LGBT Month

We are proud to present LGBT History month, which stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. We celebrate every February across the UK.

It is also our pleasure to present to you one of our current students, Karolina Bednarz who designed this year’s LGBT History Month logo.
Karolina, describes to us what inspired her to create the logo: “My name is Karolina and I have designed this year’s LGBT badge icon, which represents this community during this year’s history month. My main inspiration to create the badge was first pride parade, which took place in the morning of June 28, 1969 at Stonewall Inn. Stonewall riots were first demonstrations organized by LGBT community fighting for its rights and became one of the most important dates in its history. On the badge, I presented proud colourful crowd who for the first time went out on the streets to show their identity and began tradition of pride parades. Different colours symbolise differences between people who stand together against dissimilarities creating a beautiful rainbow. To create the design I was focus on studying the rich history of the LGBT community. Which I found interesting and important to know by everyone”.

The most recognisable image is the rainbow, which is used as a symbol of LGBT equality. The flag is flowed as a sign of inclusion and welcome. The flag’s six colours represent different aspects of LGBT communities, but the rainbow is also a symbolic representation of the variety of human expression, in all its hues and shades.
Our library stock approaches the LGBT theme from various perspectives. You will find books that tackle inclusion and equality, gender and sexuality representation in sports, autobiographies of famous writers and well-known people.
