Books Unlocked - December 2018 - The Books Behind The Headlines, 2018

A Guide to Newspapers
This December, we decided to focus on popular stories that got our attention during 2018. Our intention is to look back on this year’s newspapers and remember what made it to a top story.

Receiving news in any format, whether it is printed or digitized can be an excellent way of finding out about public perceptions on key events, news items on a local, national and international arena, any highlighted new and recent research and much more. Here, at the University of Bedfordshire we have access to several newspapers either in print or online format via the Library catalogue or digital library.

Newspapers can be a naturally good source for keeping up-to-date with the very latest developments in subjects covered within the media. The problem is that the articles and features within them often do not hold enough depth or academic standing to be used for a university assignment.

Therefore, our goal is to suggest some academic books, hard copy or e-books, connected to the stories in order to learn how to support your academic writing. By using academic books on the subject, you will be able to create a balanced perspective of the story.

Books Unlocked - October 2018 - Women's Suffrage and Black History Month

This October we  are  commemorating 100 years since women in the UK won the right to vote in parliamentary elections, thereby gaining a voice where before they had been forced into silence.

We also take the opportunity to celebrate the black women who have changed history by campaigning for women’s rights in politics, art, literature, music, medicine...the list is endless.

Celebrate with us, and appreciate the sacrifice and contributions that have been made to enrich and improve our world.

Books Unlocked - September 2018 - Autobiographies

Autobiographies

The word Autobiography comes from the Greek meaning 'Autos' - Self and 'Bios' - Life that literally means a self- written account of one's life.

Our September display includes a very eclectic mix of autobiographies from the likes of George Alagiah, Duncan Balantine, Maya Angelo, John Barnes, Dawn French & Nelson Mandela

There are some more academic works on autobiographies plus some Women's First World War poetry and an autobiography by a suffrgette. Aylesbury Library has some interesting works by nurses and midwives for you to borrow.  Please feel free to borrow anything you are interested in.

Some more books you may enjoy reading

On Saturday, 26 April 2003, Aron Ralston, a 27-year-old outdoorsman and adventurer, set off for a day's hike in the Utah canyons. Eight miles from his truck, he found himself in the middle of a deep and remote canyon. Then the unthinkable happened: a boulder shifted and snared his right arm against the canyon wall. He was trapped, facing dehydration, starvation, hallucinations and hypothermia as night-time temperatures plummeted. Five and a half days later, Aron Ralston finally came to the agonising conclusion that his only hope was to amputate his own arm and get himself to safety. Miraculously, he survived. BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE is more than just an adventure story. It is a brave, honest and above all inspiring account of one man's valiant effort to survive, and is destined to take its place among adventure classics such as TOUCHING THE VOID.

1978. Ponte, a small community in Northern Italy: peaceful woods, discarded rubbish, a closed-down factory. An unbearably hot summer like many others, wilted flowers and trips to the waterfalls. Elia Furenti is sixteen, living in a secluded house with his parents, a life so unremarkable that even its moderate unhappiness has been accepted as normal. That is until the day the beautiful, damaged Anna returns to Ponte and firmly propels Elia to the edge of adulthood.
But then everything starts to unravel.
Elia’s father, Ettore, is let go from his job and loses himself in the darkest corners of his mind.
A young boy is murdered, shaking the small community to its core. And a girl climbs into a van and vanishes in the deep, dark woods…
