American
Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis (1991)
Controversial,
but never completely banned, this novel begins as a satire on NY eighties
yuppie culture but increasing wallows in extreme misogyny. Germany, NZ and
Australia restricted access to under 18s, bookstores being required to sell
copies shrink-wrapped. Feminist writers have opposed the release because of the
graphic portrayal of violence to women. Ellis has described the objections as
“adorable” and “cute”.
