Fanny
Hill - Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure - John Cleland
(1748)
More
bawdy than pornographic, it actually has no rude words at all, just a couple of
impressive maypoles. Nonetheless it caused official anxiety from publication
right through to 1963, when it was the last book ever banned in the USA as a
whole. Far too popular to supress and cheerful and positive in its sexuality,
it is, however, the foundation stone of the male myth of the prostitute who
loves her work.
