Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov (1955)
Banned
briefly when first published, but its universally agreed quality, huge
popularity and the successful film soon protected it from further attacks.
However, as it deals with child sexual abuse (Lolita is twelve) it is the only
book in this collection to have become increasingly controversial with the
passing years. No one wants to ban it now, but it is surrounded by a forest of
scholarly texts on how it should be read and taught. The name Lolita is about
as popular in America as Adolf is in Germany.
